Paul Harris
Founder Of Rotary
The Founder of Rotary International, Paul Harris, was a visionary whose initiative led to the formation of one of the world’s most prominent service organizations. Born in 1868 in Wisconsin, Harris grew up with a deep sense of community and a belief in the power of connections.
In 1905, Harris, along with three friends – Silvester Schiele, Gustavus Loehr, and Hiram Shorey – conceived the idea of Rotary. Their aim was simple yet profound: to create a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could come together to exchange ideas, form meaningful friendships, and take action to serve their communities.
The name “Rotary” originated from the group’s practice of rotating meetings among the members’ offices, which symbolized their commitment to networking and collaboration. From these humble beginnings, Rotary has expanded globally, now comprising millions of members across various cultures and continents.
Paul Harris’ guiding principles were rooted in the belief that serving others not only strengthens communities but also fosters goodwill and peace. The organization’s motto, “Service Above Self,” encapsulates this ethos, emphasizing the importance of selfless dedication to improving the lives of others.
Under Harris’s leadership and through the dedication of countless individuals inspired by his vision, Rotary International has undertaken numerous initiatives, including eradicating polio, promoting education, supporting local economies, and addressing pressing issues like poverty and environmental sustainability.
Harris passed away in 1947, but his legacy endures through Rotary’s continued commitment to humanitarian service. His vision of fostering understanding, goodwill, and peace among people remains at the heart of Rotary’s mission, inspiring generations to come to make a positive difference in the world.
